Activision Blizzard recently released a press release revealing its fourth quarter 2022 financial results and the year as a whole. This demonstrates that Dragonflight, World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, failed to top previous DLC sales record. Indeed, with each new release of an extension, it brings even more money than the previous one to the American company.
In its statement, the development studio said that “ in the Warcraft franchise, World of Warcraft saw significant year-over-year growth in reach, engagement and net bookings in the fourth quarter following the September release of Wrath of the Lich King Classic and the November launch of Dragonflight. Although early sales of Dragonflight did not reach the level of the previous expansion, community feedback on the title was positive. »
Warlords of Draenor sold 3.3 million units in 2014, Legion equaled it in 2016, Battle for Azeroth sold 3.4 million copies and finally, Shadowlands sold 3.7 million in 2020. So this is the first time in more than ten years that a DLC does not surpass the others since, although we do not have the exact figures, we know that Dragonflight sales are lower than Shadowlands.
This decline in sales surprised many people, since the expansion was highly anticipated and garnered many favorable reviews. Blizzard has also announced its intention to provide players with much more content and tracking for the expansion. These future novelties may help boost sales. Case to follow.
In the meantime, we have some guides for you, including a summary of the affixes of the week.
