Big loss of speed for the Call of Duty franchise!

At its launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, like any self-respecting Call of Duty, smashes the scores. During November 2022, on Steam, the video game blockbuster brings together nearly 223,000 players on average and even manages to bring together a total of 480,000 participants simultaneously, which is not nothing. But quickly, the game went downhill. A month later, in December, the game saw its attendance drop by 20%. At the beginning of the year, the decline in popularity is such that more than 20% of additional players have also left. In just three months of existence, the title has lost more than half of its players, just that. Among the 223,000 budding warriors of the first hour, there are therefore only 102,000 left in January…

One would have thought that the approach of Season 2 which, we recall, arrives on February 15, was going to motivate the troops, but ultimately, it is not so. Again, based on the statistics shared by Steam, we can see that the descent into hell for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 continues, and not just a little.

Over the past few hours, only an average of 87,000 players logged into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0… If we take a closer look at the curves of Steam, we also notice that the titles gather less than 50,000 participants in their darkest moments… A more than alarming signal, especially for a franchise known for its successful multiplayer .

Will Ranked mode save Call of Duty?

If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and its Battle Royale seem to be in good shape, we imagine that Season 2, which is expected for February 15, could be their last stand. Obviously, this new major update will not completely change the formula which seems far from unanimous, but will normally bring some welcome fixes, as well as additional content: we are talking here about new maps for the multiplayer mode classic and a smaller map – which will come with Resurgence mode – for Warzone 2.0. The latter aims to offer less downtime between clashes.

But finally, the biggest news lies in the arrival of a Ranked mode which is likely to reshuffle the cards by attracting players who swear by competition. Like the new maps and the Resurgence mode, ranked games will also be available from February 15.
