Qatar 2022: A nightmare draw for the Blues?

If the French team is already guaranteed to be in hat 1 in the draw for the World Cup, the Blues can expect to see bad memories resurface with their opponent in hat 2.

If it will be necessary to wait until November 21 to see Qatar kick off its World Cup, the first meeting of the 2022 World Cup is set for April 1, the date of the draw. For now, only fifteen teams have officially won their ticket to Doha, but the outline of the draw is emerging.

The France team is thus guaranteed to be placed in hat 1 in the same way as Qatar, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, England or Spain. The last place should be played between Italy and Portugal, who will compete for one of the last tickets distributed during the play-offs. Hat 2 will also look great with Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, USA, Switzerland, Croatia and Uruguay. A hat of almost all dangers for the Blues. Or at least many bad memories.

Only Croatia…

The most telling example is obviously that of Uruguay, a team cursed for the Blues as evidenced by the eliminations suffered during the group stage in 1966, 2002, 2010, fatal to the Habs. And if Denmark was in the group of France on the road to the coronations of 1998 and 2018, it was also in 2002 and 2010 for what remains as during the two biggest fiascos of the Blues. Germany returns for its part to the memory of 1982, 1986 and 2014, with three eliminations and that of Mexico in 1966 and 2010.

Confrontations against the Netherlands are more rare but their last meeting at a major tournament, at Euro 2008, ended in humiliation in good and due form (4-1). It is obviously the same against Switzerland, executioner of the Blues during the last Euro, even if the Nati was also on the menu of the French team in 2006 and 2014, this time with much more success.

While France has never faced the United States except in a friendly match, Croatia is the only team that will bring back only good memories for the Blues. Whether it’s the 2018 final or the 1998 semi-final…
