The three-place penalty imposed on Max Verstappen for the Russian GP is not dramatic in the eyes of Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner. He relies on the talent of the Dutchman to fight for victory.
All eyes are already on the Sochi Autodrome, which will host the Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix next weekend, the fifteenth round of the world championship. For the official F1 website, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner addressed this next event which will be special for his team since Championship leader Max Verstappen will start with a penalty of three places on the starting grid. A sanction taken by the race marshals last weekend after the Dutchman was found guilty of a spectacular clash with Lewis Hamilton during the Italian GP, which then forced the two title rivals to retire the race won by Daniel Ricciardo. Despite this handicap, the Briton does not start defeatist.
A “Grand Prix for Mercedes”
“We have the grid penalty for Max (Verstappen), but in Sochi it’s not such a handicap due to the force of the tow up to turn 1. I was watching the results of the Russian Grand Prix and in 2018 , Max moved from last to first before needing to make his pit stop. We were second there last year, ”recalls Horner, however forced to see an inglorious fact for Red Bull. ” It’s a circuit where we never won… I can’t wait to be there and see how we do. “Red Bull will try to force fate when Mercedes wants to reign for the umpteenth time in Russia. On this route bordering the Black Sea, the Silver Arrows have always won since the event was introduced to the Formula 1 world championship calendar in 2014, four times by Hamilton, two by Bottas and another by Rosberg. Red Bull still has two opportunities to triumph in this “Mercedes stronghold” as Horner considers it since the Russian GP is relocated to Saint Petersburg from 2023.
