News culture The Eternals: Why were the new heroes of the MCU absent in the face of Thanos?
Now that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is out, the next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is The Eternals, introducing the eponymous superheroes. But where were they before?
This is a bit of the problem that comes up when some superheroes are introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe: but where were they before? The question had already arisen with Captain Marvel and the writers had found a subterfuge (which had not necessarily convinced everyone): the same goes for The Eternals, whose first film will soon be released in theaters.
The Eternals, or quiet strength
As the last trailer showed us, the Eternals are particularly powerful beings who arrived on Earth 7000 years ago, of which they are its Guardians. As such, many fans wonder why were they so absent during the fight against Thanos which did not ravage only the Earth, but the entire universe. Today it’s Chloe Zhao, the director of the next MCU film, who brings a first element of answer at Total Film.
The public will understand why. Not only why, but also how much it affected them. We will explore this (in the movie). You will see that the Eternals have been ordered not to interfere in human conflict unless the Deviants are also involved. It was the instruction of Arishem, the Judge.
Deviants and Celestials, the next step in the MCU
The last trailer to date effectively allowed spectators to present two very important entities: the Deviants and the Celestials. These former are formidable creatures with devastating powers and precisely the sworn enemies of the Eternals. The latter are overpowered cosmic characters, at the origin of the Eternals, who travel through space and time to research and test civilizations.
If each Celestial has a specific role, one of these “Space Gods” (as called in the comics) can be seen in the trailer in question: gigantic and imposing, Arishem therefore officiates as the judge and his powers are almost infinite. It goes without saying that their presence in the MCU should add a new dimension to the various narratives, in addition to the multiverse which should become the breadcrumb trail of the next Acts …
The Eternals will be released in theaters on November 5, 2021.
