Kevin Gameiro is not the only player to have turned his back on Olympique de Marseille because of his stint at PSG…
Gerson, Konrad de la Fuente, Cengiz Under, Pau Lopez, William Saliba, Luan Peres, Amine Harit or even Matteo Guendouzi: the leaders ofOlympic Marseille have not been idle this summer. Despite these very numerous arrivals, Jorge Sampaoli nevertheless harbored some regrets when the summer transfer window closed. The Argentine technician was indeed hoping for two or three other reinforcements, in attack as in central defense. In vain.
And the abortive departures of Boubacar Kamara or Duje Caleta-Car are not enough to explain some of the failures of Olympique de Marseille recruiters. At the beginning of summer, Kevin Gameiro, expected to relieve Arkadiusz Milik at the forefront of the attack, had suddenly made an about-face after having been very close to joining Olympique de Marseille. Blame it on its Parisian past which did not fail to tickle many Olympian supporters.
But the PSG is at the origin of another aborted transfer. Without a club since the end of his adventure at Arsenal, David Luiz has long been one of the priorities of Jorge Sampaoli, who relied on the experience of the 34-year-old Brazilian to coach young Luan Peres, William Saliba or Leonardo Balerdi. But it was, there too, without counting on the two seasons spent by the former Gunner in the capital. To believe O’Globo, despite the insistence of the Argentinian technician and a good financial offer, the 34-year-old defender has thus opposed an end of inadmissibility to the Marseille leaders because of his “identification with PSG”. Also courted by Lille, Rennes and even Real Madrid, the 2012 Champions League winner finally returned to Brazil where he signed up with Flamengo.
