Before the first match of the Europa League against OL, Steven Gerrard paid tribute to his mentor Gérard Houllier.
Now coach of Glasgow Rangers, Steven Gerrard knows perfectly well the attachment of his mentor, Gérard Houllier, for the club ofOlympique Lyonnais. The legendary French coach, who died on December 14, coached the Reds star from 1998 to 2004 before joining OL. On the eve of the match, the former Liverpool midfielder gave his feelings about this meeting of Connect Europe, at a press conference:
« I wish he was there. It was he who started me, who gave me my first chance, and thanks to him, I learned so much in terms of education and knowledge… The day I learned of his death was a very sad day for me and for my family. I hope Gérard sees the game from up there tomorrow night and that he will be very proud of both teams. »

Gerrard-Houllier, winning duo
Arrived in 1998 at Liverpool, Gérard Houllier is indeed the first coach to place his trust in Steven Gerrard, then 18 years old. He even gave him the captain’s armband four years later. The two men notably won the Europa League and many other trophies while the Mersey club had been in short supply for several years. It was following his departure in 2004 that the workforce of the Reds, composed by Houllier, won the Champions League the following year.
